Feast of the Holy Theophany

The feast of the Holy Theophany (Epiphany) in the Eastern Orthodox Church is observed on January 6. This feast marks the end of the Nativity celebration, shifting the focus from Christ’s birth to his Holy Baptism, where all three persons of the Holy Trinity were manifested. It is at this time that we are encouraged to celebrate and reflect upon our own Holy Baptism. We express gratitude to the Lord for redeeming us from our sins and bestowing upon us eternal life through Jesus Christ.

Following the Epiphany, on January 7, it is customary in the Church to remember the saints who participated directly in this sacred event. So, therefore, the Feast Day of St. John the Baptist and Holy Forerunner of Christ is celebrated.

St. John the Forerunner, cousin to the Theotokos, preceded the arrival of Christ. It was his unwavering faith in Christ’s arrival that prepared the world for his teachings and earthly ministry. For years, St. John dedicated himself to preaching repentance and baptizing people in the Jordan River. Ultimately, it was he who became the one to baptize Jesus, earning him widespread admiration as the patron saint of Godparents.

On the Feast Days for St. John, people may commemorate the Name’s Day for those named John, Joanna, Ioannis, or Ioanna. It is customary to reach out or even visit these individuals as a thoughtful gesture. You may even gift an icon of St. John as a tribute to their namesake. Additionally, you may even choose to gift a special icon or another meaningful gift to your godparent, honoring the celebration of the patron saint for Godparents.
