Spending a substantial amount of time across a table with your business partner while you both are working on the same candle, handling all the decorating material together, is a time to get to know them. You become a business family. You learn how to get along together, support each other, solve business problems and make big business decisions. All this can only happen with great communication, patience and understanding.
Argie’s basement was ideal for our work shop. We decided to start decorating baptismal candles first. It was fun and challenging for us as this was something neither one of us had attempted to do before. Argie and I spend hours on trying to create new designs for the candles. There were times that we doubted ourselves and wondered if future customers would be attracted to something unusual.
Getting caught in the excitement of owning our own business and creating something that made us feel good offering to our customers, moved us right along from decorating ONLY CANDLES, to offering all items needed for Orthodox baptisms and weddings. This happened pretty early on and there was much work to be done with searching on where to get all our products. Would we make the decision in buying products wholesale and reselling? Would we create and were we able to create everything needed? Where do we start? Many hours were spent on searching the internet and collecting data on our competitors in the U.S.A. and then over seas. It was very important to us that we offer nice quality and well made products. Much thought went into styles, prices and our financial ability to carry more inventory.
We felt the biggest need in our area was for baptismal products and that is were we started. Because numerous items are needed for the sacrament, one had to go to multiple stores to get them. Our baptismal basket became our main focus…..
